This is an exciting project to deliver in your school. Pupils will gain a sound basic knowledge about sustainability issues and priorities for action. They will develop an understanding of the wider impact of everyday choices and actions, and discover how local actions are linked to global impacts.
Pupils will find out about climate change, biodiversity, peak oil and global poverty, and how these are all connected. Importantly, they will also discover some options for local solutions to global issues, and use this knowledge to develop sustainable regional plans.
By participating in a range of activities and discussions both in and out of the classroom they will develop a range of communication and thinking skills and some core subject skills such as using maps and renewable energy systems.
They will develop a sense of place and interest in their community, potentially involving the wider school community through assemblies, and an open evening, delivered by the pupils to parents and other school staff and community members.
Ultimately, the pupils will be motivated to live more sustainably as individuals, will be able to make well informed decisions about which solutions have the biggest impact, and have developed a vision of a sustainable future for their region.
